ARTICLE: How to Do Maintenance for Ceiling/Pedestal Fans

The ceiling/pedestal fans require consistent cleaning and periodical maintenance. Gradual deposition of the dust particles affects air flowing capacity of the fans installed in a room. For better caring of the ceiling/pedestal fans, here are some general maintenance tips for every user:
  1. Use a plastic scrapper for removing the thick layers of dusts deposited on a fan.
  2. Regular servicing in every two years essential. Excess deposition of dust on the fan’s motor-house often burns the ceiling and pedestal fans.
  3. If a fan is cleaned in every week, use a paper towel, soft brush, or a piece of soft cloth. Do not apply much pressure while cleaning body and blades of a fan.
  4. Buy a fan according to the size of the room where it will be installed. A big-sized fan fitted in smaller room certainly affects regular air blowing. On the other hand, a small fan in a bigger room, only blow up dust and making insufficient flow of air. A 48" fan is ideal for a standard-sized living room.
  5. If irregular jerks are noticed in a moving fan, take a closer look, if the canopies are positioned. Next, make sure that the screws are properly fitted with the body of the fan.
  6. If the same issues are reappearing, draw a small mark on the roof aligning the final edge of the blade. Now observe if all the blades are moving perfectly positioning the line marked on the roof. If not, the pitch of the fan will need to be adjusted.
  7. When a fan's pitch adjustment has been done, but the problem is not over, we recommend you to bring a balancing kit (available with the local electrical hardware stores) and fix its balancing.
  8. Lubrication of a fan mainly depends on its brand. Recently, there are some brands of fans available in the market which comes with maintenance free double shield ball bearings. The fans of this variety require no oiling. Apart from this category of fans, oiling is requires for all the other varies of fans upon drying-up of the ball bearings.  Insufficient or lack of oil on the ball bearings fitted in a fan creates odd mechanical sounds while the fan is moving. If this problem not addressed immediately, the fan gets short-circuit and burned.
  9. Manufacturing defect on the body of a fan or improper fitting with the 'S-rod’ from the top roof mainly keeps a fan trembled when it’s moving.
  10. A defective capacitor fitted on a fan troubles in freewheeling blowing of very less amount of air.
  11. If the fan is fitted to the roof with the help of an attachment, verify if there is any crack on the attachment. Replace the bulb if it is a defective one.
  12. Get the fan inspected by an expert electrician if the incidences of flashing, sparking, and fire burn are noticed. If you are not an electrician it’s better consult an electrician who is fit for this job.
  13. A fan catches dust particles from its surrounding areas, so keep the walls and the roof clean and free from dust.
  14. Install a fan at a height of 7' to 9' from the immediate floor. If more than one ceiling fans are installed in a room, maintain at least 10' distance between every two fans. Maintain a distance of 18" from a ceiling fan to its nearby wall(s).
  15. A ceiling fan installed in a room which is adjacent to the kitchen room, obviously attracts oily dusts and other floating components on the air. To clean a fan, use the cleaning agent recommended for maintenance of painted items, or soft soap-water solution. You may use nylon for cleaning a fan.
  16. The blades of a fan can be cleaned with a soft cloth spraying anti-static agent on it.
  17. Please note, a damaged bearing or the bush of a fan can never be repaired and reuse.
  18. After cleaning a fan, get the oiling done with the lubricating oil used for guns or sewing machines. Apply little amount of oil on the screws fitted on the fan’s body.
  19. Users are advised not to apply drops of oil through the holes. The better way is to set open the fan and apply oil on its various parts.
  20. For cleaning of excessive dust and thick oily dirt deposited on a fan, use a brush or detergent. A pressure washer can be used for this purpose. But remain careful of any possible incident of short-circuit and fire on the fan’s body.
CAUTION:
  1. While installing avoid a junction box if it is made of plastic.
  2. While cleaning a fan, never use a hard cleaning object or any material made of coarse- natured materials.
  3. Frequent cleaning often miss-balances the blades of a fan. This will create unwanted jerks while the fan is moving.
  4. Never let a fan moving for excessively long hours, it may cause a fan
